Hi,

I have a number of favourite old books that need rejuvenating.

Many have titles that are imbedded into the covers. Is it possible to re-letter the titles on the covers and what procedure should be followed for this?

Any information is appreciated.

I have tried to apply hot foil gilt to faded lettering. It is very difficult to obtain a neat result because you cannot see what you are doing through the foil. It has to be done with a hot tool such as a rounded tip soldering iron with a temperature controller as it would be almost impossible to replicate the font style and size. If you sort out how to do it accurately we would all like to know.
A less than ideal method is to use a gold ball point pen. This works well and can be applied accurately, but is not long lasting and could fade after a few years.
If it is just titles that need freshening I use new leather labels to glue over the existing title area. This works well if the book has raised cords on the spine but is less acceptable on a smooth spine.
